Shenandoah-Rose River Falls
Rose River Falls and Sparrow Hammock Camp
Winter camping is one of my absolute favorite activities, even though I always end up freezing my toes off. This year, we chose to venture to Shenandoah for some winter fun and decided to hike to the stunning Rose River Falls. Unfortunately, the limited sunlight meant we couldn't complete the entire Rose River Trail, so we began from the end and trekked until we reached the falls. While my friends endured the icy weather, I took the opportunity to set up my tripod and capture these breathtaking shots. Luckily, the remaining sunlight allowed me to capture these photos before my friends convinced me to begin our hike back.
For our winter camping adventure, we decided to explore an alternative to Shenandoah's campgrounds because they close in the winter. After some research on hipcamp.com, we found a hidden gem called Sparrow Hammock Camp, nestled within the picturesque Watercress Inn at Landon Farm in Etlan, Madison, VA. From the moment we arrived, we knew we had made the right choice.
Not only was the campground itself fantastic, but the owners were incredibly friendly and accommodating. Even though we only stayed for a single night, we felt a genuine warmth and sense of hospitality. In fact, we were so impressed that if we find ourselves in the area again, we would definitely extend our stay.
Waking up to a snowy landscape was an absolute treat, reminding us why winter camping holds a special place in my heart. There's always a thrilling possibility of opening your eyes to a breathtaking winter wonderland. It's an experience unlike any other.
However, my cozy night in my hammock took an unexpected turn as the snowfall began in the early hours of the morning. Thankfully, we had the foresight to also bring two tents just incase. As I settled back to sleep, listening to the gentle patter of snowflakes on the roof, I couldn't help but smile at the magic of the moment.
Sparrow Hammock Camp at Watercress Inn at Landon Farm proved to be a remarkable winter camping destination. With its peaceful surroundings, attentive owners, and the unexpected delight of waking up to a snowy wonderland, it's a place we'll definitely return to for future outdoor adventures.
